Benefits of Asphalt Driveway

Asphalt is a popular material that is applied as a driveway in residential and commercial premises due to the number of advantages it has. When properly installed, asphalt surfaces are durable and support heavy traffic and heavy usage without any serious damage.

The other advantage is flexibility. Asphalt is also prone to shrinking and swelling with changes in weather and thus is not prone to cracking as much as some other materials.

Asphalt driveways are also cost-effective, and in most cases, they can be built at a relatively low cost compared to concrete.

Prepare the Site for Installation

Asphalt driveway installation often starts with the cleaning of the place where the installation is to occur. This includes clearing grass, debris, old pavement, or loose soil. After that, the ground is graded by contractors so that it attains the right grade to allow drainage of water.

After leveling off the area, a concrete base layer is laid, which is usually crushed stone or gravel. This base is used to support the asphalt layer and eliminates future shifting or sinking.

Laying down the Asphalt Layer

The asphalt material is then laid on the base. The asphalt that has been heated is brought on-site and extended all over the driveway area with special paving machines.

Heavy rollers are used to achieve proper compaction. It is important to compact the area, as this eliminates air pockets and makes the driveway strong enough to bear the weight of vehicles. An asphalt surface that is installed properly will be strong and improve curb appeal.

Ensuring Proper Drainage

The success of any asphalt driveway installation with drainage is important. Ponding or puddling water on or under the foundation can cause the foundation to be weak, and it may crack or create potholes.

Correct grading will ensure that no water stands and will secure the driveway structure as time goes by. In other instances, the channels or drains might be included as extra drainage systems to drain the property.

Curing and Initial Care

Once the asphalt is laid, it will take time to cure and to harden completely. The surface might seem prepared in a short time, but during the process of its curing, it reinforces itself.

It is recommended that heavy vehicles should not be parked on the new driveway by the homeowners for a few days. This will avoid the development of any holes or damage on the surface when the asphalt is still drying.
